Vikunja is a young Swedish rock/pop band, who has started to create somewhat of a buzz around themselves - without even having an album out!
In the autumn of 2011, the band (consisting of only three members; Alex Hansson on vocals, Johan Israelsson on guitar and Martin Larsson on drums) has not only been touring with Roxette, but also begun recording their debut album with well-known producer Mats Valentin. Their music can best be described as a heart-warming mixture of Swedish pop melodies and the songwriting and attitude of the British rock arena.
As with a lot of things, the idea of wanting to become rockstars can be pin pointed down to one peculiar moment. In this case it was somewhere around 2003, when two 15-year old boys heard the first chords of David Bowies masterpiece album: “Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders From Mars”, and decided among themselves that this was a life to aim for. All fired up by their sudden affection to music, they started to search the British music catalogue to see what more that was to offer. This lead to the discovery of bands such as The Verve, Oasis, Blur, Keane, Muse and Coldplay, which all have served as inspiration. Although the band wouldn’t form until many many years later, it could be said that this was the foundation of it all.
Vikunja’s music is about the things closest to heart. Things like being madly in love with someone you can’t have, or being stuck in your hometown when everyone else is leaving. Songs about being stuck in a relationship where love has long gone faded.
2012 is sure to bring this band to new heights, and with that, Sweden will hopefully have another great band to be proud of!
